Nice to be able to find your artist Boland.,but Komokwa with the name and Debora, linking the name to South Africa did most of the hard work.Thats what makes this forum what it is,everyone contributing with their time, knowledge , skills,and opinions,to try to find the answer to all the queries and questions.Just as a side note, having looked at your painting,I believe it's depicting a child's birthday party.The child is wearing a red conical hat and in front of her is abirthday cake with candles lit.The lady in the red dress appears to have a glass in her hand,and not cards as others have suggested.Again that's IMO.

Read an interesting article about the artist. Seems to have been an interesting but complex person (maybe also a bit troubled) He was not very well known in South African commercial art circles, and basically just worked on his own in his studio in the back of his house for many many years. He also destroyed a number of paintings he was working on just before his death.

“Glaser was primarily a printmaker. His visual art comprised mostly of drawings and prints (etchings, lithographs and linocuts), but also some paintings, the earliest of which are the most interesting”

“His presence in the art world is officially, but tenuously, valorised by a single line in Esmé Berman's Art and artists of South Africa (1969), by one image in FL Alexander's South African graphic art and its techniques (1974) and by a mention in the list of printmakers in the back of Philippa Hobbs and Elizabeth Rankin's book, Printmaking in a transforming South Africa (1997). He appears in no recent histories of South African art, and will no doubt remain largely absent from any future histories, his impact being little felt beyond his own immediate circles”

Sad really that he got so little recognition for a lifetime of work and devotion. But that’s often the case with artists and other creative individuals.

 

I agree then,overall team effort (thanks all) I like the idea of a birthday party.. Does seem to fit the scene particularly with that red hat.. Was also thinking maybe it was a dress-up or costume party thing..

Ok then, as soon as it was opined that it was a birthday party, the thought popped in my head that it's a seance and the bright thing in front of the person with the hat is a crystal ball . . . well, you did say that all visions are valid.

 

I think the most interesting thing about the work is the perspective and the fact that it's in an unusual medium for the artist, a printmaker. His work does seem to feature top hatted men and enigmatic figures to the right.

I suggest you contact this academic. He mentions in this article that he holds the artist's oeuvre so he'd likely to be interested in seeing another piece of the artist's work.
