PS- I guess when listing a piece on Ebay it's OK to go big and bold price wise ? Ask 12K- accept 3K (never hurts to ask !).

 

If you have access to it: https://www.ebay.com/sh/research . You can see the last three years of true price results. Some of the more recent worthpoint results are based off the full BIN and not the actual offer made. Ebay is such a mess.

A friend of mine used that idea as a basis for selling used books via eBay. Of course, most of them would not have been listed for thousands of dollars. Still, if you pick up a book at an estate sale for, say, $20 -- add some research and a good description, and then be patient -- you can sometimes sell for much more than you paid. Whenever the right buyer comes along.

 

IMHO, books have become commodities because of eBay and it's a very difficult category in which to make a profit. Not only are most titles widely available but there are important variables such as edition and condition which affect sales.

Ditto Debora-Books & Book Stores were very precious places when I was a kid, and antique books of most any kind a curiosity. I recall going to the library to peruse the volumes of American Book-Prices Current (ABPC).
PS-Best recent movie of Book Collectors/Collecting was 'The Ninth Gate' by Roman Polanski.

 

No doubt... but my friend seemed to enjoy it, and he did make some profit. And is still selling there today! -- I wouldn't have the patience to do all of the packaging and shipping.
