Identify!

Can anyone tell me what this is, it has no hallmark.

 

I'm not sure what its function is, but the form is a squash of some kind.

 

Someone must know!

Does it sit upright? I think it might be part of a bigger object.

From the shape of the hole , doesn't it look like there was a cap at one time ?

It is a gourd bird house for the upscale, diminutive types

 

Possibly for a pendant watch?

I think it is a piece of studio jewelry, meant to be a charm for a bracelet or necklace.

 

People in the Southwest USA and Mexico hollow out gourds for bird-houses. So I imagine other cultures do the same. The birds really don't like them much, but some folks just consider the gourds cute, and sometimes paint and decorate them. So yeah, a charm... pendant... ornament...

 

Any worth?

 

Out West, at an arts/crafts fair or such, absolutely! If I made something similar of clay or papier mache, I'd call it a pendant/ornament, hang it on a pretty ribbon, and ask ten-twenty dollars for it. So depending on what type of metal it is, that would ADD value...

 

Everything about it screams silver but no hallmark.

 

If it were marked silver, I would value it (at an appropriate art/craft spot out West) at 50-100... people love that kind of stuff. At a store in Ohio, I don't think there would be much interest. And moreover, I just don't know how many people would be willing to pay a silver price for an unmarked piece. You could ask a jeweler to have a look. And with a written authentication, a buyer might be satisfied. Let's see if some of the silver brainiacs here have a better idea.

 

It looks like there's a lid or something similar missing from the back. It could have been a clock mechanism that fit inside, but it's hard to say now.

 

You don't give measurements but it looks like the finial to a tea or coffee pot that Wm Rogers and others made during the 1800's.
