Glass Paperweight Inscribed 1917

1917, the year or something else? Not sure of the rest, Luna Andentena?

 

The writing reminds me of what you see on souvenir pieces from the time frame that a date of 1917 would be from.

 

Doesn't seem to have much wear on the bottom for a 100 year old item ? Better pics of the inscription would help.

 

Will post more pics later. The second word may be Andenken, which is souvenir in German.

'Zum Andenken An' translates as 'in memory of' and I found it on other Bohemian pieces as well.

 

I'm unconvinced of this being the purported date. It simply does not have the quality.

 

The writting looks like a vibrating tool that could have been used to make a souvenir out of any abject. I remember seeing booths at local fairs doing that on request to items brought by the booth operator.

 

Artists sign on bottom or on very bottom edge.....and they do so much smaller..

 

Were not German paperweights not the best quality anyway?

Dates could be linked to an event in the past....death, birth, or other occasion...

 

1917 would have been during WWI, the Armistice was 11/11/18

 

I think this was made later and engraved retrospectively.

 

Hey Kard, I just realized there's no picture looking at it from a downward angle. How many flowers are in there?

"Large Czech / Bohemian Trumpet Flower Paperweight. Circa 1900-1930.
Unusual trumpet flower paperweight with five blossoms. There is one large pleated center flower with an unusual circular pattern of white and shades of amber surrounded by four smaller amber flowers. There is a planned bubble in the center of each flower and another alongside each flower. The flowers are pushed down to a multi-colored green frit flower pot ground. The glass is heavy crystal.

This style is also called an icepick flower because of the sharp tool used to push each flower down to the base. In this case the tool is pushed through a multi-colored glass slice. Some authors call these morning glory flowers.

The maker of this paperweight is unknown, except that it is believed to originate in the region along the Czech - German border, hence the label Bohemian. Most likely from Silesia or Thuringia. Von Brackel discusses this style in his book He lists many variations on pages 106 to 149 with a wide range of values up to $300 and more.
