Bought this bowl at the thrift store along with a Cherokee vase and an Acoma box. There were a couple other Cherokee pieces with chips that I did not buy. Have to think they came from the same collection but not necessarily so. Appears to be hand built, burnished exterior, raw clay interior and bottom. Decoration appears to be paint. Only mark is an original price of $1.75 in pencil on the bottom. About 5" diameter x 2" tall.

Thanks! I think you are right. I found other similar examples. I am more familiar with the black and red carved pottery from Santa Clara so this one threw me.

GaleriaGila is absolutely right...Santa Clara, probably 1950s. That shade of gray is made from a clay slip discovered at Santa Clara in the early 1940s, and still used occasionally today.

Although burnished redware is documented as being made at Santa Clara as far back as the 1860s, it wasn't until the 1930s that they began decorating it, first with the white, then as other colors were discovered, the white was used to outline the designs. It proved such a popular style, some Santo Domingo potters even copied it for awhile, usually outlining their typical flower and leaf designs.

This is Santa Clara, though. Gregory Schaaf even shows a pottery basket in his book Southwestern Pottery, that features the same scalloped design, "by Belen Tapia, ca. 1955."
