diamond shaped Meiji dish?

    I'm sure it's not more than 15-20 dollars, but i'm curious what these diamond dishes were for exactly. I've come across a few. I'm just starting to learn about asian antiques and cleaning out the rat hole. Is the ornament on the bottom a signature?

    You don't give dimensions, but trinket dish, or even ash tray would work.
