This tray has a hanging loop on the back so I'm calling it a plaque. I don't see any marks. It is about 12" across. Help with any information please.

Do you think it's a flue cover? I do.

Really? It's bigger than any flue cover I've ever seen but WDIK?

It might be a flue cover but I just think it is a wonderful hanging plaque.

It looks like someone removed the steel wire around the rim to sell it as scrap brass

Someone else 'saved' it and rolled the edge to cover up the damage where the wire was removed

I'm pretty sure it was made this way but I'll check out your theory.

I think it was a round charger originally

But perhaps it was cut from something else

The crimped rim look awfully uneven given the pretty good casting of the girl, so I'd agree with Terry. Perhaps salvaged from a wooden frame?

I have a really hard time telling brass and copper from bronze. This doesn't look like bronze though, does it? Isn't bronze usually much thicker than this? I get more of a copper feel from it, especially that pebbly background. Tell me how to see the difference please.

The difference between copper, brass and bronze is less than 10%

Any of them can look very similar after some aging

Birg, I thought the same as you - that perhaps it was copper. Thank you for the explanation Terry, now I better understand why I have such a hard time telling the difference when viewing online photos of items.

it doesn't touch me as particularly art nouveau, but rather classic in Greek or Roman manner.

How old do you think this is? Do I hang it any old where in the store, or back in my little area reserved for "real" antiques rather than just vintage?

perhaps someone might know when those hangers started being made in this form ?
to me the whole looks machine-worked, deep-drawn then rolled-in on the edges. I'd stay on the vintage side to be safe.
