Signature On Art Glass/Porcelain Plaque

Our Lady Star of the Sea? I think it's a Madonna of some kind, and the front looks like ceramic tile. Don't ask me how they got Mary associated with the ocean; I'm just a poor Protestant who had more Synagogues around than Catholic churches up until recently.

 

Yeah, we have a Madonna of the Sea(s). BOO-YAHHH!
Not church-sanctioned, but very popular, has been painted by the Masters and such. Let me look around a bit.

I can't make out the first few letters but I believe it was made in the Republic of San Marino in Italy. Thus "R. Marino", abbreviated to fit the panel. Although the figures appear somewhat crude this was the intention of this artist. His or her talent and skill shines through. I can't be certain if the piece was made in the first quarter of the 20th century or if it was made later and the artist was emulating the European ceramicist of the 1920's and 1930's who settled in the areas of Vietri Sul Mar and Sorrento.
The subject matter is interesting as the principality of San Marino sits atop a mountain and is land-locked.
