As some of you might remember, a few weeks ago I bought a silver pocket watch...

The dial says: "BRAVINGTONS RENOWN" / "SWISS MADE", and the case is hallmarked for Birmingham in 1925.

Does anyone know WHAT Swiss company made watches for Bravingtons in the 1920s? Bravingtons was a London jewelry retailer at the time.

Bravingtons advertised on the back covers of pulp fiction magazines in the 1950s with the slogan that I still remember "Take the ring road to Bravingtons". This was very much of its time as towns were just starting to get 'ring roads' as they were redesigned after the German bombing cleared the way.

They were a fairly down market jewellers, a working man's shop, and I doubt if they paid any more than they had to for the movements in the watches they sold, and I'd not be surprised if the case maker was Dennison.

Some times you can find an ebauche makers mark under the balance wheel, usually half obscured by the balance spring. The maker could be any one of dozens of ESA members who formed a sort of movement making cartel called Ebauches Societe Anonyme, or Movements Limited.

Without a mark, it's down to those men ib a shed again.
