Delftware Plates Rear by Lord_Dee posted Jun 15, 2016 at 4:39

I have a pair of old plates of what appear to be tin-glazed earthenware with a handpainted "Chinese" scene. They're 9" in diameter and 1" deep. There are no marks on the base, save for three "tags" used in the firing process.

From what I can gather, this sort of pottery and designs were popular in the first half of the C18. Is there any way of establishing which pottery may have made them (Liverpool, for example) and are they particularly scarce/ valuable?

    Many thanks.

    Hi and welcome!
It's possible to narrow down a lot of information. Just from the look I'd have said second half of the 18th C. I did find this example which offers some idea of what it may be however this is from a book published in 1987 and as research goes on sometimes there is better and more recent information available. It says probably Liverpool c.1770. I have a dozen or so books on Delftware but this was the only one with this exact pattern. At least it is a place to start. The book is London Delftware by Frank Britton.

Thanks for that. I didn't expect the pattern to be traceable with the plates being unmarked and so old. :)
