    Pictures

About 18-22 inches high. I have two of them. They are from my late grandmother who was an art and antiques collector. She accumulated things from all over the world and my dad says he thinks these are from Venice (where she lived at the time of her death) and from pre-17th century possibly 15th. There are no intentional carvings on them that I can find that would give them more context.

My grandmother unfortunately passed away a year ago and I didn't have a chance to ask her about them, so any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated, even if it is just pointing me to a better place to ask if this is the wrong forum.

A similar lion at the link. I can't vouch for the description. Says used at entry ways / stairways. Guardian lions...?

It's easier to find them with shields, than without.

First impression... guess... Lombardy or Switzerland. A decorative item for stairways/entrances/gardens/fireplaces. Guardian lion is a good description. Consider what the others have said. Everybody (so far) is pointing to the same general area.

Definitely Red Breccia. Very helpful, Laura. Also 19th century seems accurate in terms of facial shape based on the second picture posted by GaleriaGila, compared to the first (16th century) lion posted by GaleriaGila.

This is all great stuff! So does it seem like they are likely from France? It seems the similar ones are from the Baroque Revival period, implying French, but I also know very little about this stuff hence why I am asking you guys.

Edit: Just found these which are the most similar ones I have found although mine are smaller, in worse condition and breccia marble rather than carrera. 19th century france was definitely a break through though!

    I'd say 19th C. and probably later 19th C.
