Hi to all again....Not too much feedback from youz regarding my last posted Items..??
Here is a Painting that I might buy if price ok....
I am not so sure about the Period....?? And the Provenance..He looks alike a young french Revolutionnaire ?? "Not a Yellow Jacket"...Not so sure if French..Could be English or why not Irish..?? Unfortunately not signed in front or behind....
The painting as per photos taken today is an oil on canvas and measures 29.5 x 37.5 cm....With the frame..39x47 cm
I am a little worried about one of his eye...and His ears..Which looks to have been retouched or restaured..Nothing wrong on the canvas behind...???
Well..If you could spend some time looking at it and give me more infos..Will appreciate.

I cannot speak to former restorations,
suffice to say this needs a lot of restoration work.

As I said about your last thread, Chinese storage vessel and ask Princessehof about specifics, send them good photos. Those vessels are very difficult to date. There are few specialists in Southeast Asian storage vessels, and few people who can tell you where to ask.
About the shell stoneware, I said probably oil jugs. Joint effort reply: likely origin Rhine-Meuse region, Fid suggested Raeren and gave link to museum.

I also identified the Bodhisattva, and the VOC mark on the sword, which both Springfield and I thought was of Indian origin. I gave a list of VOC colonies in India, Spring gave further instructions. You decided Ceylon instead of India, even though it bears no resemblance to the elaborately decorated Ceylon kastanes or similar Ceylon swords. But it is yours, so yours to decide, and fine by me.

All in all I think we have given you something to go by in every thread. I am sorry you are not happy with the replies you got.
I for one loved seeing your beautiful items and replying to your questions. I am sure I am not the only one.
Frankly, I don't know where you would have had so much feedback in such a short period of time on the diverse items you showed.

First impression is maybe early 19th C. The people who know fashion might have a better idea.

This area looks fragile to me - maybe a bit of paint loss and some potential flaking:
    z1a.jpg

The stretcher is not a proper canvas stretcher. It looks like someone has tacked a piece of canvas to a wooden frame (which is not the same thing as a canvas stretcher). Could be original - I don't know.

My guess is that the painter was an itinerant portraitist, possibly self taught. Some are known, most not. It's a bit naive.

I like the things you are posting, but simply don't have much information to offer.

Pretty nice portrait, yes I'd say English or Irish, possibly a fragment, looks 18thc or early 19th at latest, don't see any restoration, looks original.
Do not clean or restore it as it will lose value.

"School of" portrait. Looks Regency period. Early 1800s. What is written in chalk on back?

The P is a capital. It may be the surname Pondarre.

I never said it needs "immediate" restoration, but it's badly cracked, and simply painted in "off colors" towards the blue scale, does not look like "faded" oil paints, although anything's possible and the rose red colors fade the fastest. If it were me, I'd not want to buy it, so it depends if you want to purchase it for resale or not?

Please mention the painted restoration work on the eye or ear - the previous restoration - is this the "pink" color painted into the face? That's the only color that seems to not match the look of the rest of the painting.

Yes indeed and I did appreciate a lot...Maybe a little too inpatient I have been...Anyway reg those 2 antique jars marked...Just got today a very nice message from..Drs Karin Gaillard PrincessHof Conservator Keramiek Europa...Mentioning that ...As you were 100% right they were made in Germany..(She mentioned Germany..) but had at the time first was a big demand from Netherlands for their trading Navy adventures to East and West...They are basic but have on it a logo marks which is difficult to determine...Olive Oil ..Alcohol, Wine...All depends of the traders at the time...No clear specifications on those marks which are not recorded at this day so far anywhere....Probably from period end of XVI th XVIII th...She send me as well some marked recorded equivalent Dutch pieces which were dated later after 1800...So nice and interesting to dig up and get infos....Regrds..JCK

Thanks for your comments...A little worry to make an offer...But for sure there is something at my eyes which attract me with this painting...It is true that it looks to have had the painting stuck on a canvas...?? Maybe bad news..?? No signature..Even worst..?? Wouldn't mind as suggested to have an expert on cloth and fashion dresses to give me an idea...Can't go back and take more details photos....Unfortunately....Not so sure I am....Jck

Oh, that is very nice news, and very nice of her to give such an extensive reply.
I knew Germany was most likely, since stoneware in the Netherlands generally came from Germany. (I think I mentioned that in the thread) It still does, btw. Today it is mostly from the Westerwald region, but in those days it came from many more places.

Besides, many people who worked for the VOC came from the German lands. Borders weren't as rigid as they are now, and the riches of the 17th and 18th century Low Countries attracted people from all over Europe, especially the neighbours.

Not so sure about the blue cast in this case. It's true that's reds seem to be the most fugitive colors and fade away first, but in this case the color shift appears to continue across the frame. The photos of the back also appear blue-shifted (at least on my monitor). That suggests the problem is in the photos.

Easy enough to adjust color balance on a photo, but no way for me to know how valid the result may be.
