Carved Wooden Box

    Any suggestions on type of wood, age and origin?

    If the sliding piece lower front is what allows it to be opened or locked, then it should be from India. I have one similar, acquired new in the 70's. Don't know the wood, though, or how long this type has been made.

    I have one similar. Was told it was indian, wood possibly sandalwood. Hard to date these, sorry that's all I can come up with. image.jpg image.jpg

    Thank you both. Yes, that piece slides in and out so it can lock.

    The wood may be what is sometimes called "shesham" or "sheesham" but I don't know if that is just a local name.

    This box has some age on it, but there's no way to know if it was made in 1986 or 1946. They're still being made.
