rubles or something else?

Surgical straight razor in case. Fuzzy maker's marks on instruments. The case is embossed 1902r.

 

You may already know this, but the г is an abbreviation for год, which means "year." So 1902 is the year the case was made.

The word "ruble" in Russian is рубль. You can see the first letter is very different.

 

The top of the fuzzy mark is the double-headed eagle of Imperial Russia. Have no clue about the rest!

 

Prices so fixed they built them into the stuff was a Soviet thing. It was an attempt to control an economy by regulating everything from production by command (five year plans, etc) to fixed prices.

It was a remarkable failure, even compared with US Prohibition. No one in the supply chain had any incentive to do anything but the least they could get away with, and to steal the most that they could get away with. The colossal cost of WWII really torpedoed the economy for general goods and after the war 'post war austerity was still the main feature when I was in Russia in the late 60s. They even had a non rouble economy for foreigners with dollars and the Nomenclatura, the top party people.

It is not surprising that when it all went belly up, a few people managed to effectivly steal whole state industries and become the Russian billionaires we know and love today. When all private enterprise is criminal, you train a huge number of criminals, who carry on much the same when private enterprise is allowed again.

Anyway, just sayin'. You will not find fixed prices on Imperial stuff.

 

If rubles, this would have been about $358 USD in the WWII war era or $950 earlier?

I did find a an Austrian Hungarian metal company using the chicken mark but I think that was earlier too.
