@jefferies , how did you accurately calculate the density of this bracelet through water displacement with the stones still mounted in it?

    Thanks for all the suggestions.

    The bracelet is not magnetic.

It is gold. The weight is 40 gm and the displacement of water is 2.5 cc. Density = 40/2.5 = 16. That's typical of gold.

What about marks? I admit the photo is not ideal, but I have been over the bracelet itself with a lens.

There are plenty of random scratches, from user wear but I cannot see anything that could be interpreted as a mark.

One poster spotted something that looked like a punch mark on the barrel on the hook side. That is the rounded head of a rivet that goes through the barrel to the other side.

I have closely examined the barrel at the other end. I'm afraid that 'mark' is an artefact of the photo.

Believe me, I would like to find marks, but I can see none.

Does this density test give you the gold carat ?

I read this in another site.

Metals may be combined to form alloys. It is possible to combine a minimum of three metals to yield a density that mimics that of pure gold. If a specimen has a measured density matching that of pure gold, it is recommended that further analysis be conducted to confirm that it is indeed made of pure gold.

It is rare for gold not to be marked in someway, I would have it tested. properly

First, I don't claim to have accurately calculated the density of this bracelet, i.e. to laboratory standards. But the densities of gold (and platinum) are on their own when it comes to materials for jewellery. The bracelet is clearly not made of platinum

The tiny stones are set in a white metal. If that is silver then the combined effect would be to very slightly lower the density of the bracelet overall.

If the links were freed from their ends, and if done in a lab, the density test would give you the gold carat.

Thanks for the lead to the possibility of three metals mimicking not only gold, but also the density. I found the source and note that the three metals are not specified. Nor can I find any such suggestion on other pages. The metals used would have to have a density that in combination had the density of gold. What could they be? I suspect the author is wrong.

Yes, I shall get the bracelet tested properly! But for now I am curious to try to find out something myself. I am. Thanks.

The item is not pure gold because it would be too soft for jewellry so it will be alloyed with other metals.

It could be anything between 22ct and 8ct so this density test is not really accurate.

    It needs proper testing.

  11. I'll gladly take that beauty to a jeweler close to me to have it "properly" tested for you. Let me know if you need an address to send it to. ;)

Thanks Shelley, but I live in Oatley - a southern suburb of Sydney, Australia. We have a local jeweller and I shall be paying them a visit.

  13. I'm really curious of the outcome...I have my suspicions but not sure enough to post them. Looking forward to what you find out!

I'm OK thanks. Live on a ridge. Others have had their jewellery melted in the fires, and/or then washed away in floods.
