The lid is glued and the jar rattles like there is sand/ash inside. Plus the date of birth and death on the base. Just 10 years old. Why this piece ended up in a thrift store? Of course I did not buy it. ... Maybe I would have if the jar was antique ...

Let me just suggest, that this was for a pet and not a person. But that's only from the fact that appears so small next to your hand.

Often times after someone passes the family doesn't do their due diligence in clearing out the estate. At auctions I've seen tons of sensitive documents in box lots including driver's licenses and social security cards. My parents about 10 years back bought a used computer at an auction that still had all the deceased's files on it like business records, personal letters, and tax returns.

I've heard stories of cremated remains being sold as well. Very sad.

Well if it was for a pet then maybe bring it home - all pets deserve a final resting place with a caring person/family

To avoid this ever happening to one of mine, everyone knows they are to mix my ashes with those of Gracie (who sits behind me in her carved wooden box) & any others. The ashes are to be scattered out on a wide open road. I would prefer it to be somewhere in the mountains with lots of roaming around room, but have specifically told them it is not to be on some interstate highway. ;):hilarious:

Peggy, when my younger sister Patty died in 2011, we mixed her ashes with those of Shea, her beloved yellow lab, and scattered them together at her favorite place at the beach. I often think of them running together along the shore.

Aquitaine, thanks so much for saying that. (Some people I know thought it was a really creepy thing to do, but I knew from the start that Patty would have wanted it that way.)
    Thanks again.

I have a jar with ashes.....but am not entirely sure whose. I think my Dad gave it to me, with his mother's ashes which he did not want to deal with. I don't know what to do with them either.

My Dad on the other hand, has left instructions that we can do whatever we want with his ashes, as long as we do not scatter them at sea or in water.

He was in the Navy, and understandably does not want to be lost at sea even after death.

    Hi,
I had a friend back in Manhattan whose father died. She and I took her dad's ashes and went to his favorite bars. We had a drink and stuffed a few pieces of him into wall cracks. It took all day and we were really drunk by the nights end. Sissy thinks her dad would have been pleased. The rest of the remaining pieces were tossed into the Hudson.

My parents both had a traditional funeral. We were at the mortuary for a full day & then a funeral mass the next day with burial immediately afterward. This is why I do not want any type of service & want to be cremated immediately. Those 4 days were the longest days of my life & I refuse to put my children through that.

The one thing the 9 children did for my Father at the mortuary is we all toasted him with a Heineken, which was his favorite beer, & sent a "traveler" with him. ;)

So far we have 3 dogs on the mantle in their own nice little 'boxes', with Gracie just diagnosed with early heart failure :( , so some day, I or we are going to be a significant mix of ashes to either bury (we both already have lots) or scatter!!!
