    Hi All,
I picked this up the other day, to me it looks like a scene from Quebec. Not for sale, I bought it because I just like it. Would the ink outline be done first and then the paint added? Or some ink added after the paint?
The frame is 18" x 21 1/2", signed H? Witham, framed in Victoria BC, framing company no longer around.

both could be done at the same time.....or either one first..
but it you're thinking color by numbers.....like inside the outline...no.

When I was young, I fancied a future as an artist. I took various courses to explore what medium best suited my talents including watercolor and ink paintings. The process as I learned it was to draw outlines of the main objects, and add shading and lines in India ink using a dip pen with a nib, and then filling in the outlines and painting the background with watercolor. Painting within the lines wasn't a necessary component (Thank goodness). If Jivvy was here, she could explain this much better and discuss the techniques using modern materials. But since she isn't, I hope this will help.

I've done colored pencil where I put some lines over the top. I think that's what happened here. I like it. Woodcutters taking a lunch break. When I was growing up in rural NH we used to have skating parties where we'd build a fire and roast hot dogs on a stick to eat. It was especially fun when it was on a moonlit night. Massabesic Lake in Manchester. There was a little open roof building with benches where we would sit to put on our skates.

That is a Lloyd Witham watercolor and ink painting. He was my uncle, and painted scenes from his life. He didn't love in Quebec, but did live in Saskatchewan.

thank-you Averil, that is great information:) I couldn't find much information on him - the Government site on artists just has 1913 as a possible birthdate and that he lived in BC
