It was not clear to me that the comb end was of brass/bronze, either. That information leads me to pursue other angles.
Is there any communication between the round recessed area, and the slotted comb section, like a slit at the base of the recess? If so, it is a rastrum - a tool for drawing the five parallel lines in a musical staff.

    (With thanks to @2manycats, too.)

Many aspects can be difficult or confusing at first, including how much or how little should be said.
    Everything will be OK.

@2manybooks and @2manycats how on earth did you find that out? I have googled so many times using every combination I could think of and never had a result! Thanks so much again. :)

A case of 2 heads are better than one. Once I realized the end was metal, I began to think of the circular depression as a reservoir for a liquid. When 2manycats saw 5 prongs, he thought of the staff lines. Then google "tool for drawing musical staff". Simple!
