I can't read the label from the gallery.
Does it have a zip code for the address?
Area code for the phone #?

Both of these would indicate a newer framing.
To me the frame looks 1970s-80s.

It appears to be a print also.

Framed before 1995 as the Liverpool dialing code changed from 051 to 0151 and the Phoenix Gallery does not exist now.

If you look through a magnifying glass or loupe, do you see dots?

Looks too flat for a oil painting. Also the label says by Courtesy of the Russell Cotes museum which means permission has been given by them to a company to copy the original painting. I’ve been caught myself if I’ve gone out without my loupe, thought I had a pencil drawing and it turned out to be a print on closer examination.

You are welcome. It is good fun though finding items that initially you think could be really valuable and even when you find out they aren’t you still had fun with the experience and you get to find out more about identifying others you come across.
I once thought I had a catseye jewel, turned out to be glass.

    Hi Everyone,

I bought a oil painting by an artist called 'M James' in a charity shop at Rhos on Sea, North Wales last year. It has the address of the Phoenix Gallery in Liverpool on the back of the frame (a place that someone else has recently mentioned on this message board). It's a rather large painting of a lighthouse on the coastline and it's approximately 24 x 28 inches. It's a really nice piece and I was wondering if anyone knew anything about this artist.

I would be most grateful for any information received.

    Kind Regards.

    - Kevin.
