5 inch tall Royal Doulton harvest tankard. Rummage find. The query is why does it have a 48 date on a piece with the backstamp manufactured between 1922 -27? Any ideas please? If it was 1848 the backstamp would be different and 1948 hasn’t happened yet.

Are you sure Stephen, the backstamp on mine doesn’t have the crown and states 1922-27 or am I mistaken?

Good point. The crude date on the side might imply it was a test firing and an old stamp found lying around was used. There may never be an answer to this question.:D

The date on the side means it was made as a commemorative piece for someone - C J Cornwell. Quite common, they did a lot of bespoke stuff. 1920s backstamp.

Think that’s most likely, an old backstamp used on a more recent piece. Thanks.

Thanks, it was just a confusion with the 1920s backstamp and a 1948 personal date when it should have had a different backstamp.

The date wiill refer to 1848, not 1948 - I'd suspect it was Mr C's birthday.

I've not seen memoriam pieces, but I do own several birth ones.
