Unusual black bulbous basket, not sure of age/origin.

I picked up this basket with the other one in my other thread. I liked the unique shape but I know nothing other than that. Web searches are coming up empty when I try to look for something similar.
My flash makes it look brown in some pics but it's true color is best in the first picture, a dusty black.
It measures 8.5" tall without the handle x 9.5" across it's widest point.
Fixed handle and tightly woven.
Any ideas as to age/origin ?

I'm going to hazzard a guess ......Japanese Ikebana basket....

maybe a Chinese copy....as it's very plain...
