Here is another one that's a mystery to me. Besides the big, bold, black "T81" on the bottom, the word "mortuary" is pencilled on the bottom. What do you think? Anyone recognize this?

    It's about 10" tall.

    Thanks again!

How do you spell mortuary, anyway?

LOL, I think you spelled it! I guess it could be an urn, but sheesh, it's also nice pottery! Any clue who made it?

    Thanks for looking!

Perhaps janetpjohn was getting at the fact that the writing seems to have a t before the y, and therefore may not have been intended to say mortuary? Frankly, without a lid, this wouldn't be an appropriate container for ashes.

it may have had a lid at onetime, & maybe a ginger jar !

LOL, maybe it says "mortuarty"? I just discounted the extra "t" because my writing can be as bad adding extra unneeded letters at times, too. I don't think it had a lid. There's no wear and ginger jars usually are left bisque at the top lip.

Perhaps it's Moriarty - I believe it may have been owned by a notorious criminal! Regardless, it's reminds me of a typical oriental glaze. Whether it's actually oriental or an American copy I don't know. It's very pretty.
