Both lead and zinc oxidize. (Lead-white paint is made with oxidized lead.) Lead weighs considerably more than zinc. I would expect it to seem light-weight if made of zinc. I don't know about the smell. Could be an influence from the wood. Maybe some kind of mold.

People used to eat wafers of lead stamped in the image of saints. It was like taking a holiness pill to fight the devils within. As they did that way back when, there may be somewhere they're still doing it today.

Thanks to all for looking and for offering your thoughts and opinions on both the composition of the saint and his (or her) ID. I've been looking into each suggestion and I'm just not sure that there is enough detail left to make a positive ID ... I think I see a beard, but it could also be a lump of corrosion ... oh well. The metal could be lead or a lead alloy ... seems that it does corrode in this manner and that one of the causes for this, is exposure to acidic vapors ... such as those found in containers composed of wood. It was doomed ... what with being stuck in that little wooden capsule for so long.

St Anthony was a Franciscan priest, and dressed accordingly.
