welll.....not so much......more like it has no native american theme or figures or designs.... and I'll say it's over carved for a 1st Nations work.... IMO..

Deer antler is carved wherever they have deer. It is also carved here in the Netherlands, and we don't have that many Native Americans (maybe 100 or so). I can't recall any of our Native Americans ever carved deer antler, but traditional Dutch craftspeople do carve it.;)

Sambar antlers are nobbly and darkish near the head of the deer. The base could be stained.
Indonesia manufactures many items like this, probably on the island of Madura.
    Exactly!:)

I’m pretty new to Native American carvings but it doesn’t strike me as being Native American. I would vote for Asian carved too, regardless of what material it may be. Take my opinion with a medium sized grain of salt though.

I don't actually mind your thoughts on the eagle carving because I put the carving on here to gain your thoughts and examine my own. The thing that puzzled me was why would someone not sign such a beautiful carving..... after reading everyone's thought I may have stumbled on the reason for the anonymous carving.
It's not anonymous at all and it was not carved by hand but by a machine in Asia or Indonesia and sent for sale to a dealer here in North America. I also know now the eagle is not ivory but bone. The bottom has been carved like the eagle was perched on a tree stump. I do thank you for your explanation and I will say it and all the others on this forum really helped me.:happy:

I can see that, but they still don't look like the feathers on the body of a grown eagle. Agree with komokwa's description of 'over carved'.

Even if from Asia or Indonesia it is very likely hand-carved; labor is so cheap there that wood, stone, and bone items can be hand-made very cheaply. Some of the wood carvings I am familiar with, for example, are hand-carved as a kind of cottage industry, and often one family member might do the rough carving, another the finish carving, and another apply the paint; making multiple copies of the same item, but all hand-made.

Agree. Besides, most families couldn't afford those machines.
