Antique newspapers

    Hi everyone,

    I was lucky enough to be given some antique newspapers and I just wondered if anyone knew how I should store them? Thank you for reading my post, hayley

    Welcome, Hayley. When were the newspapers printed?

    Hi,
    if the newspapers were printed before the 1900s they are 100% cotton and should be fine stored in the dark. if printed later than the 1900s they are probably 100% wood pulp and need work. The Met and the Library of Congress both recommend soaking each page in an equal mixture of antacid like Maalox and club soda. Soak for 15 mins and hang to dry. I have saved many articles cut out from newspapers pre 1940s and they are still snowy white. I have a few papers from the Civil War that are still in fine shape without the treatment.
