Antique towel rack

    That may be a quilt / blanket rack. Think towel racks are constructed like this.

    Also, most of the towel racks we two to three pieces that were put together so that you could spread them apart for drying more towels. What you pictured looks to me like a quilt or heavy bedtop/bedspread rack for holding those piece while you used the bed.
