When I actually need to find something specific, I'll head to an antiques store or online, because the selection is more concentrated.

If I don't have anything specific in mind or less to spend, flea markets and thrift stores can be fun to really get that treasure hunt feeling. I visited 5 of them today. 4 yesterday... 6 the day before that.

I basically never go to auctions or estate sales. Not many great ones around here.

Charity shops are frustrating: 99,9% of the stuff is worthless and overpriced. All the better things have been filtered out by the staff or priced higher than they are worth.

We've lost all of our antique stores down here. Now we have shabby chic décor and thrifts. We've got five thrifts in our tiny town. They are all run by volunteers who dabble in Ebay so all of the good stuff gets snatched up before it hits the shelves.

    Hi,
Years ago when I lived in NYC I would go to the main Salvation Army store in Newark NJ. It was a five storey building filled to the brim. Found wonderful treasures there. I have a friend who called me from the SA in Newark NJ last week.
They still have wonderful treasures there. He just bought a set of cobalt blue Depression Glass, 38 perfect pieces for 25 bucks, the 9 chipped pieces the store gave him for free. It made me want to go back again.

I've been known to hit everything but the high end galleries. Scored some of my sister's Christmas earrings a church clothes closet ... free. You can't beat free. Tomorrow morning there's a church holiday sale; the white elephant and jewelry tables at those can be gold mines. They can also be total busts; one from this morning falls into that category. One person there had old stuff, and it was all pottery and glass; I didn't look at the prices.

I hit mostly estate sales, moving sales, yard and garage sales and some local thrift shops.
But the thrift shops near here of late have junk, so I depend on the other places to hunt and gather .... or fish.

    Thanks!
Shocking that there aren't any antique stores there for sure!

Cape Cod used to be famous for antique stores, but not any more.

Once upon a time. There were more here too, but they're gone. One fairly close tried to open and make a go on it. They were closed again in two or three years. Prices were a little steep like most retail outlets, and the location was lousy. Meanwhile, new antiques stores (with crazy prices) opened on the other side of a local "mountain". There's a whole cluster of them. They cater to the one percenters who live out that way, so you can guess why I don't even think about bothering.

My regular good scores are at church sales, often the jewelry tables set up for holiday bazaars.

The majority of my favorite items have been acquired at estate auctions. Seems to be the cheapest way to acquire quality items around here in Southern Ohio. However I've been finding some decent prices at antique malls in the past year, their prices used to be crazy high but now due to soft antique market prices are softening and I've been able to buy a few things at reasonable prices. I'm a collector so I'm not afraid to pay retail for a piece I really enjoy. The thrift stores are generally terrible here, not an antique to be found and all the semi collectable stuff is priced higher than antique shop levels so I've all but given up on finding antiques at thrift stores.
