I'm going to buy some Elderdowns for the cold winter months and would like them to be old rather then vintage or new,

How can you tell the difference in age ?
    In style ?And stitch ,

Would they be smaller in size because people was said to be smaller in them days

And was there a certain pattern to that time period ,

Is "Elderdown" supposed to be Eiderdown? That's what Google suggests. I've never heard of either word.:p
An eiderdown is a down filled quilt or comforter..? Or are you looking for some kind of long underwear?

Eiderdowns are what you lot call comforters. They sit on top of a bed, rather than hanging over the edge, and are used with blankets and sheets. We also call them quilts.

Eiderdowns here are filled with feathers rather than quilt batting. I'm not sure I'd want a used one. Vintage quilts are another matter. Some of the old ones have wool batting, as do a few new ones made as custom pieces.

LL Bean used to sell nice ones. I'd try Sierra Trading Post too; their prices are good and their quality if often very high. They sell overruns and closeouts, and often have European merchandise that's hard to find otherwise.

    Hi,
I bought one in Denmark in the early 70s. It is the best thing I ever bought new. I got it at an old farm outside Copenhagen. It folds up into nothing since it fits in a pillow case. It is all goosedown. I grew up with ones made of chicken feathers that were 12" thick. We lived in the mountains of Western Pennsylvania next to West Virginia. We had NO central heat and being under the featherbed you never wanted to get out of bed. This one is only 5" thick but three times as warm as the ones I remember. It launders well but takes hours to dry.

True eiderdown comes from the breast of the eider duck and is extremely expensive. They (true ones) cost thousands of dollars.

I stayed with an elderly aunt when I was little. I slept in a feather bed with an eiderdown quilt. Greg is quite right - there is nothing warmer. Bless her, she'd get up at 5 am and get the wood stove going before she'd call me into the kitchen.

If you don't want to spend a great deal of money, IKEA also has a selection.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

And when drying anything Down, I toss an OLD, not-used-but-CLEAN pair of sneakers, in the dryer with the item......they fluff up the Down tremendously!!!!!!

That's a point do you have use a dryer I was thinking of hanging them and let then drip dry or will that cause the filling to gather at the bottom .

I am a bit if a traditionalist lol.

    Hi,
They will take a long time to dry by dripping. Mine takes at least three hours in the dryer and I still dry it outside for another two hours, Going out every half hour and "fluffing"it. If it had channels it may dry sooner but I like the big fluffy envelope of feathers like being under the wing of a DRY Momma swan.
