Help confirming origin two elephants carved on ebony

There is a family lore about those two elephants carved on (probably) ebony wood, white nails on feet are probably ivory. The history runs that in 1922/1923 one of my ancestors was traveling in China and purchased those two elephants (images attached). I wonder if by the design anybody can help me confirm if this is really Chinese artwork or other. They are quite heavy for their size.

 

I recall these as a pretty common household item from the 1950's.
They had ivory tusks as well as nails. They were often seen as a group of 3 in graduated sizes or sometimes one or two adult size with 2-3 "babies".
I had always thought they came from Africa, but could be wrong.

 

Asian or Indian Elephant not African elephant. Ears are too small.

Sorry can't help with age. Probably been made since the turn of the century and are still being made.
The older ones had ivory.
Newer ones are probably plastic - but I don't know this for sure.

Yours appear to have some age as the wood tends to crack with over time.

 

and the toes could be bone..

 

I would say India, 1920's, bone eyes and nails, would have had bone tusks as well.

 

My family had a lot of carved elephants in ebony and several other woods, looked pretty similar to these.
Theirs came from Sri Lanka, around 1959, when it was still known as Ceylon, so these could well have come from there, or from India.
Which is not to say similar things were not being made in China.
