Another little find from my hoard that I'd put away as needing further investigation.
I idly put it on a FB jewellery page thinking it wasn't of much interest but may have some age and was told it was likely to be 19thC due to the cut of the stones. Peruzzi cut was mentioned but when I googled that seems to span quite a long time. Can anyone help me with any more information or pin a narrower time span down for me?
It's not gold, not diamonds and not magnetic but I'm interested in what I can find out about it. Not sure how the remaining stones are held in other than by will power!.
Mary Contrary is sulking but cheapy diamond tester just blips up one bar so may not be glass but not precious.
The backs of the stones go all the way through the band. It has a stamp but it's not possible to decipher.
    Thanks for looking :)

It is definitely not a Peruzzi cut stone as they were "square" and not round. It looks like a poorly cut example of an old European cut stone.

Maybe they practiced on glass like this until they could do better?!

The gems being held in by the little dints in the metal- does that help to age it? The back of the stones are pointed. I'll try to get a better photo of the cut tomorrow if it helps to date it.
And would this be described as pinchbeck?
    Thankyou :)

I think for the mark I see an A. Maybe @Aquitaine can come to the rescue?

    The metal looks like Pinchbeck.

“Gypsy set” and if pinchbeck it would be pre 1840ish. You say it isn’t gold, have you tested for 9ct.

@i need help, I do see the 'A' you mentioned and it does seem to look like there's a pig or wolf or some beast behind the 'A' also....

No, because I've run out of low carat acid so I used 12c on a touchstone. I will order some more. It's not going anywhere until I understand it so there is no hurry, I'm just fascinated trying to unpick it. On FB I've had suggestions from 1880 to 1980 so who knows!.

Very clever enhancement of the mark Aqui, Thankyou :). I've got a microscope magnifier, I'll see if that helps if I can get it at the right angle.
Please may I borrow your enhanced photos to put on the FB thread?

This ring has given me a crash course in construction and gem cutting but I'm no nearer to being able to pin it down completely. Would be exciting if it was that old!. I've also had someone tell me it's 1980 so .

I hope it's not 1980, that would be such an anticlimax!.

You would need to define "gypsy set" for us,the ring setting doesn't match any definitions I know of.

Holly, what is the name for this setting with the little burs of metal turned in to hold the gem?. I'm struggling to find anything similar online without the right search terms.

It looks like 9 MG to me. I have no idea what that means or if I just can't read.

We called it bur set, push the graver point into the metal an lever the metal toward the stone over the edge of the stone.

That's often called gypsy set in the UK. Might be Georgian paste.

It is possible, although I have found Georgian paste to be very bright and clear. The ring isn't Georgian, but the 'stones' could have come from an older piece of jewellery.

I'm so confused with this ring!. I've had everything from 'Georgian' to a 'hobbyist made it (badly)yesterday', from 'isn't it interesting' to 'worthless junk'. Probably is worthless but that's not really what I'm after. I've learned quite a lot about gem cutting and setting but not come to any firm conclusions about it. Maybe it will just keep its secret!
