Hello Elena - I don't believe that mark has been attributed to any specific Limoges factory. That makes it difficult to date with any precision. Based on that lovely decoration, though, I'd say last quarter of the 19th century.

I must not be remembering correctly as I am not finding anything.

Asiatic Peacock - many companies made patterns depicting this theme. Yet I am unable to come up with anything. Either spelling it wrong or there is another word associated with it that I'm not remembering.

Asiatic Pheasant, I think, is the term you're looking for Cluttered. I should have recognized it.

Yes, and that certainly is possible, but the quality of this decoration is exceptional. After you've handled enough of them you get a feel for the hobbyist painted items. Limoges factories also sold blanks to other Limoges companies for decorating. Those pieces are usually, but not always, double-stamped. One for the company producing the white ware and one for the company that decorated the blank.

    Hi, Elena -

I absolutely LOVE the coloring & decoration on your tureen!

Now, I have no clue if the info given below is correct, but the Limoges tureen shown below is the closest in shape & mark that I found in a brief search.

    The seller says:

Marked Limoges France in green on the bottom. This mark was used by Castel in Limoges France between 1955 and 1979.

I'm still holding by my original answer. That Limoges mark goes back to at least 1900.

Don, that's why I posted so many "qualifiers" in my reply. I tend to think it's older, too!

I'm sorry SBSVC - I've got to stop posting quick messages at 4 AM. (Thank goodness I'm not on twitter.;)). I actually found your post quite interesting. Apparently that mark is still being used for white ware. My understanding is that Castel is a decorator that paints the porcelain of other Limoges factories (mostly boxes). Your post raises some interesting questions. Could it be that particular tureen form was revived and used again? Or did Castel decorate old white ware that was basically new old stock? And I think the seller may have meant the Castel mark was used from 1955-1979, not the white ware mark.

What I should have done was recommend that ElenaFL visit the Haviland & Limoges China, ID Show and Tell page on Facebook. Those folks know their stuff and are far better at answering these questions than I am.

SBSVC, I sincerely hope I have not discouraged you in any way from posting the information you find. You certainly provided all necessary qualifiers. Personally, I believe all information is helpful. I don't understand folks that sit on their knowledge and reference materials. I fail to see how that does the field any good.

  15. It is definitely a Limoges blank decorated by another house, and beautifully I might add. In my opinion it is unlikely to be Limoges Castel simply because the majority of the items they produced were cobat blue and their gilding was always 24ct and this looks slightly darker. From the pictures I am not sure this is a tureen, what size is it? As has been said before, that Limoges mark has been around a long time so dating it without another mark is difficult but the gilding generally on Limoges porcelain is quite robust and for it to have rubbed as it clearly has means it has some age. I noticed a gold oval, is there no mark in that?
