BlueVase2.jpg BlueVase1.jpg Maybe it's just my opinion but I think this Vase is gorgeous! I have no idea who made it or age or anything at all. All around the edge of the flared top is opalescent. The only decoration is the one you see in the pic. It stands 12 1/2" tall and 7 1/2" across the flared out top.

Try searching opalescent JIP or opalescent jack in the pulpit vase.

Thank you George. I searched for them both plus some other names and came up with nothing:arghh: I love this Vase but maybe not as much as 7 years of searching.

Might it be Dugan, from the early 1900's? The hexagonal base shows up on many of theirs, but I don't know about the etching.

George & SBSVC, thanks to your help I found one similar! It is almost like mine it is Dugan I'm pretty sure. The only difference is it is 7" tall, mine is 12." It doesn't have the etching. Otherwise it is exactly like mine, same color, same base. Thank you 2 very much!

The flower is a cutting not an etch

George, how did you get so smart, able to tell it's a cutting from my picture.

Thank you Walter for the links! I found one also but it, like you link shows them at 7" with no cutting. I wonder if Dugan had another company do the cutting?

Wheel cutting, aka gray cut, was a relatively easy skill to master as compared to the years of apprenticeship needed to be able to do brilliant cut decorating. Consequently, entrepreneurs would purchase the machines necessary set up both large and small shops, then purchase their glass from whichever glass company they could get a good price from. The names of many of these shapes, especially the small ones, were never known or are now lost. For the most part, the designs are simple enough that you will find the same or similar decor from various decorators.

While glass companies did do some wheel cutting themselves, in most cases the glass was purchased, decorated and then sold to retailers by someone other than the glass company who made the glass.

For these reasons, it is usually impossible to ID a particular decorator and wheel cut patterns are usually not helpful in IDing glass.

It is generally easy to tell if a piece has been decorated with a wheel vs acid. The shape of the elements of the design is usually indicative, and you can actually see parallel lines within the shapes of the decor on wheel cut pieces.

Etching uses stencils with was resist and acid to produce the designs. The design themselves could be patented and therefore proprietary to the company who created the design. Acid etch decor are most often done by the glass manufacturer and are therefore useful in IDing who made the glass. A few decorating companies bought glass and applied their own designs, Lotus is one that did this.
