IMG_0669.JPG IMG_0668.JPG IMG_0670.JPG Hi! A client recently gifted me a piece of pottery, a flower pot to be exact, and I know NOTHING about pottery. She said that it was made in the southern United States during the early to mid 1900's, and belonged to her grandmother. The piece is made from yellow clay, is substantially heavy for its size, and has no markings. Did grandma make it, or......?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

SOMEBODY definitely made it, it is hand tossed on a wheel, then the exterior was knifed up for a "special effect" - of which I have not seen before.

I'd use it to hold a plastic flower pot.

I cannot tell for certain, my eyesight isn't great. It also appears the pot began to "crumple" as it was being thrown on the wheel and instead of just crashing the clay and saving it as slip, the maker decided to use it anyway. Am I seeing this correctly?

    Could've been intentional.

Could be from one of the small commercial potteries in the South during that time frame. It is unusual so could be one of a kind. Whoever made it had some experience and talent so, unless grandma worked for the pottery, I doubt she made it.
