I'm assuming it's made of pottery, not resin. Is that correct? (Or maybe chalkware...?)

He looks like a Chinese fisherman.

Are there any marks in the clay anywhere on the piece? Any marks or info on the bottom of the wood pedestal base?

    How tall is it?
Could it be wood that someone painted?

There are lots of good reference sites out there. Google is your friend. I have a few sites bookmarked on my laptop so I don't lose them, but more often I'm on the desktop and it's supposed to be for work, so I can't bookmark sites or my boss gets mad (family business - hubby is the boss!)

The bubble-type imperfection near his right hand, I think would only occur in a pourable casting medium like resin. The seam residue on the insides of his trouser cuffs also indicate casting as well as lower quality because the casting wasn't even fully trimmed after it hardened. A safe insurance value would be about $20. imo. The page Bev linked above gives you some idea of the large variety of resin kitsch that's out there now.

Hey thanks a lot at Springld.arsenal and Thelmastuff. You guys are amazing with your knowledge. And thanks a lot for being so specific. Apart from being resin are there any other significant ways of identifying a good statue or craft work.
