I have a photograph album from the 1860's give or take a few years with a family that includes a Mr Hiram Holt and his wife Miranda from Maine.
It's a family album with the Leavitt/Newman families. Hiram's wife was a Newman before marriage.
Hiram owned a tool manufacturing business in Maine and made the Holt's Lightning Hay Knife which looks to be a well known farm implement and desirable among collectors, as are the trading cards, etc.
Would the album I have be more desirable with his CDV in it ?
I hate to remove the pictures but I'm not sure if the album would be more collectible with him in it.
I can't find another picture of him on the Web, but I'm sure there must be some out there.
What would you do and in what category would you list it ?

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

I would want to keep a family album together. In my opinion the fact that they are identified and he has that story would appeal more to historians or genealogists.

That one photo might also appeal to collectors of the knife or the trade cards, especially if the knife or some other implement is in the photo with him. Otherwise, I don't know how widely just a photo of him and his wife would appeal to collectors of the farm implement and its ephemera. I'm sure there would be some collector out there who would like it, but not sure of the competition level.

It seems that the most appropriate category for the album would be Collectibles > Photographic Images > Vintage & Antique (Pre-1940) > Photo Albums

If you decided to separate the album there are other categories to place it in... or if you wanted to take out just that one photo and list it separately, you could mention in the listing for the album that you are also selling that individual photo, and vice versa.

Thanks so much Fig. I really don't want to remove the card so I'll probably keep it together and use his name as a KY.
    Makes sense. :cat:

    Hi,
Besure to use other family names if they are listed as key/words. Family members might be interested in regaining the album. I had a stack on old photos in a box. Some of them were id'd with surnames and I listed them. A family was looking for photos and contacted me. It seems that a great aunt had a fire and the photos were tossed into the trash. I cancelled the sale and sent the box to them. They were so excited and happy. They ended up sending me a check for much more that I could have sold them for. It was a win win.

Some of you antiques board members may remember helping me locate the US relatives of an admiral and sell a family album to them. This was some years ago. Still much appreciated.

shiloh, you could put "Holt's Lightning Hay Knife " under item specifics so that the knife collectors would see it if they do a search.
