Hello, I found this site searching for forums dedicated to antiques. My Mom passed away 8 years ago and my Dad 4 years ago. I inherited my childhood home. The house was built in 1920 and my Dad owned it for 70 years. He was the last in his Family and my Mom only has 1 sister left. My Grandfather lived with my Dad and my Aunt for many years before my Parents met and got married. As a result I inherited a house full of a lot of old items. My Parents often got things as their siblings passed. My Son now lives at the house so there has been no urgency to clean it which men I have done little. On top of the furniture, steamers trunks, glassware, my Dad was a Millwright in a factory for 33years meaning tools, tools, and more tools. My plan of attack is get rid of known junk. I know because things are old doesn't mean value but there are things that are there that have no value. I will be asking lots of questions and apologize in advance. This is not a strong point for me. Oh yea my Dad was also a bottle collector. It never ends. Thanks in advance. Jim

Welcome, Jim! Sounds like you've got a lot of work ahead of you. My word of advice... Don't assume anything is "junk." Sometimes small things have surprising value. That includes paper and other ephemera.

Jim, members are likely to suggest you post a few items in the same category at a time. (If you do so, you might want to number the items in the photographs for easier identification.) That will speed up your work a bit. Start where you're comfortable but sometimes it's helpful to begin with larger items so one doesn't feel bogged down by minutia. But as I wrote above... Don't assume anything is trash. For instance, an old ticket stub can be an unknown treasure. Or a half empty perfume bottle.

Welcome! Be careful not to be too specific about the location of the house or the bunch of us on this side of the Pond may descend on it. Steamer trunks sometimes turn out to be treasure troves.

Welcome to Junk Heaven, Jim! You'd be surprised what's worth something to somebody. I'm just north of Hartford myself, so I may even be able to point you to someone local if needed.

Good morning all! Yesterday we spent some hours going through the basement. Lots of junk thrown out. There is a lot of glassware down there and my Dad's bottle collection is larger than I thought. Lots of tools old and new. Some good some not so good. I am going to start a thread with what we find now that we have some room to move around. Jim
