    Hi everyone!

I was hoping that I could get some help with maybe dating this figurine. I have done some internet searching and am trying to learn more about porcelain items. This place seems a great place to begin, but I do not want to be a bother.

I think it might be Japanese and I know my Father has had it for at least 30 years. The bottom is marked with the number 38. This seems to be the only marking.

    Thank-you all in advance.

    Hi Jason, welcome.
If you have a genuine question, which you have, you are never a bother.

Your charming statue is Chinese and represents Guanyin, the Goddess of mercy. She is one of the most important figures in Chinese belief and mythology.
Guanyin is a Buddhist deity, that is why she is sitting on a lotus throne, a Hindu and Buddhist symbol of divinity and spiritual growth.
She is holding a flask containing 'the dew of compassion', which cleanses body, speech and mind, removes suffering, and grants a long life.
She may have been pretty new when your father bought her. These statues are still being made, because Chinese people all over the world love to have them in the home, either for worship or for her benevolent influence.

I think she is very nicely done. Different from the ones you normally find.

Jason won't know what's hit him when he wakes up. He is in Oz, so oblivious of what everyone has been up to in his thread. Poor guy.

Hello AJ, thank-you for your welcome and for the information you have given me. This figurine has been in my Fathers cabinet my entire life and now I finally know the story behind her. Thank-you very much, really. My Father is a collector of many things, just not these kinds of figurines. Though he does pick them up from time to time if he likes them. Seems his collecting ways have brushed off onto me, because now I have a house full of things which make my rooms look frozen in time.

Hahaha, I got a good laugh out of these. I was not expecting this lady to cause quite a stir...though after being locked up for so many years, maybe she should explore her options...and with a King no less!

Glad to see a forum with a sense of humour.

Thank-you so much for your help guys.

    Take care from Australia.

    Jason.
