Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

A new purchase. This is the photo I mentioned in a different thread while my eBay Purchase History had disappeared. I bought this one only to see if it would show up in a purchase history after buying it. And it didn't. (Now, fortunately that problem is over with.)

Anyway, this is a trimmed cabinet card photo. if there was any photographer's logo it was cut away. The two boys are ID'd on the back in pencil as Gene Street and John Street.

I've started to look for information on them but really just barely, and haven't found anything. Can anybody help? I know that some of you are very good with this type of thing.

What's your best guess on when this was taken? 1900 or so?

Judging by the costume I'd say they were Street entertainers.

    Good one AF!

I bet they had evil thoughts about their mother.

Could the last name be Strut???

This interesting surname derives either from the Old Norse byname "Strutr" meaning "a cone-like ornament on a headdress or cap", or, it may be a nickname for an argumentative person deriving from the Middle English "Strut(t)" (Germanic "Strauss") meaning "quarrel" or complaint".

(Martin Gabel played Mr. Strut in Hitchcock's "Marnie." I wonder if the name was actually meant to be indicative??)

Methinks the boys were playing Our Founding Fathers for the Harwell Prep School. Very clean little boys, said Ringo.

I think probably first part of the 20th century... maybe first 15 years or so?

Shiloh, now that I look at it, I think it is more likely to be Strut. Should be a lot easier to research that name, if this is a U.S. photo... I don't even know the country.

Hm, I found a Eugene Strut, age 15, in the 1940 U.S. Census. This would not be the one in the photo, but his father was named John Strut, born about 1889. He could possibly be the one in the photo, if the photo was just a little earlier... say, late 1890s to very early 1900s. But, this may not be him at all.

The census is cross-referenced for the surname to possibly be Street in this entry... so both need to be searched. Could be a long process!

I tracked that John Strut/Street (that one IS Street btw) with son Eugene back to the 1900 Census - no brother named Eugene.

Tried to find others (of which there are quite a few) but was unable to find a John/Eugene sibling combo. Doesn't mean they're not out there somewhere. As you know, not having at least a general location where the picture was taken is a serious problem.

Yes, you're right - I know that. Thanks for looking and tracking down that one person. One less road to travel...
