Chinese architectural element

    I noticed this roof finial (circled in yellow in the second picture below) of a Chinese temple in a picture of an 18th century export platter.

    What is the inspiration behind it / or the purpose of it? It's not the most common type of finial in Chinese architecture, I assume.

    Maybe a sōrin, if that's a Buddhist temple.
