It's always been my understanding that generally speaking, red wines should be drunk at room temperature to enjoy the full body. White wines are usually served chilled. I have seen more recent decanters than the ones illustrated here, with a glass or plastic tube to hold chipped ice but assumed they were for serving white wines.

I'm amused by the little guy on the lid. I've seen one with a guy sitting on a barrel before. I wonder if he is supposed to look like he's sliding into your glass as you pour though I'd think your thumb on the little guy would hide that unless you pour without lifting.

That was my immediate impression, that he's sliding. Looks like you don't need to lift the lid to pour, so he would tilt with the rest of it & look like he was on a slope or slide.

This is an AMAZING statue!. I have no idea how she hasn't fallen off the back though, she looks so chilled out considering she's being attacked by a....lion? is it?

Well at this point in time it's the horse being attacked but if she falls the horse may take off and leave her to the lion so I'm thinking do or die.

Claret Jugs, with or without classic etching, normally have a silver mounting. Sometimes just a sleeve, other times as above, with handle and cover. My knowlege is limited to those without ice tubes.

I do have some very fine crystal (which I'm completely sure about) that make the nicest little "ding" that you describe. But they are glasses too. I'd describe it as a lower note "ding", definitely not a dull thunk.

To me it looks like curtains for the horse if she doesn't kill it quick.

I would like to know how this sculpture that was not cast in bronze until the plaster model came to the US was widely enough known to show up on this carafe & on Italian cameos that probably predate the bronze. Think there have to have been prints of a drawing in circulation for it to reach cameo cutters. I'm thinking your whatever-they-ares are German/Bohemian. What do you think?

No, I glanced at that same site & somehow managed to completely mangle it. It now becomes clear how the image spread to other media. There still must have been some kind of graphic version disseminated.

They lost me a little with this:

With the assistance of the German government, a new plaster cast was made from the original bronze and exhibited in Memorial Hall until 1909. The decision to commission only American art prompted the Association to present the Amazon as a gift to Harvard’s Germanic Museum. However, once construction began on the new building for the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Association arranged to cast another copy so that it could sit across from The Lion Fighter.

Did they give Harvard a bronze or the plaster? The Lion Fighter is also by a German sculptor. Why not donate it to the Germanic Museum? Discussions at those meetings must have been something.

I suppose that could be the case. An interesting question, how much stuff did foreign exhibitors keep with them for sale to visitors? I'm betting the jugs are German, so would be a good souvenir to have the image of a German sculpture on a German claret jug.
