    Hi,
I bought a bunch of art today and will need help.
This is painted on one of those metal wall calendars that used to be in banks (last photo is of one), signed E. Strittich 1937. The only thing I can find is a painting by E. Strittich WPA Industrial Painting Coal Yard (link attached). Do you think this is by the same person.
    Any information appreciated
    thanks for looking

Could very well be. Any proximity to the linked one to Montreal?

Even the "E" in the signature is pretty much the same.
In case you don't have an account, I can tell you what the other sold for - $125

Brad, I'm not sure I understand your question - I just used the Bank of Montreal calendar as an example, all the banks here had them, not sure what bank is under the paint.
Thanks for the info Messilane, I don't have a subscription.
    Thanks Lucille!
Would this be considered a WPA piece? I've never heard of this art before so I've been reading up on it and found an article about the WPA art recovery project. I can't find a complete list of artists that were in this program. If it is WPA does that mean I can't sell it and have to return it?

Thought the Bank of Montreal was the back-side and a possible link to provenance. This is vaguely in the style of the WPA works but it is not WPA. As such, there is no problem with owning or selling. True WPA works bear a stamp or a label stating their provenance.

Thank-you Brad! lol, I was wondering if by posting this here it would alert some government agency about a possible WPA piece - sometimes my imagination goes a little crazy.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

There is a current eBay (U.S.) listing for a 1970 painting signed Ella Strittich. Based on the way certain letters are made and the general look of the style, I think it may be the same person. I also found a listing in Find A Grave for an Ella C. Strittich who lived from 1901-1990. I have not looked in Ancestry, but maybe somebody else would like to?

    eBay listing: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Painting-Vi...state-Snow-Scene-Ella-Strittich-/361399069958

Ella C. Strittich was buried in the town of Summit, Schoharie County, New York:

And looks like she was buried with her husband, Franz F. Strittich.

Okay, here's what I learned on Ancestry. Ella (Gabriella) Strittich and her husband Franz Ferdinand Strittich, emigrated from Austria to Canada. He came first 1929, heading to Winnipeg via CNR. She and their daughter Sonya arrived 1930, but now she says they are going to "Frank" in Medstead, Saskatchewan. Sometime between 1935 and 1940 they came to the US, living in Schoharie County, NY where Franz is a farmer, but she lists no occupation. I would suspect that the painting was either their home in Saskatchewan or the new house in NY.

There is no SS death record for him, but her death record says her SSN was issued before 1951 in New Jersey.

And another thing. Franz died in 1962 (only way to know that was the headstone, he's not listed separately on Find A Grave,) so she would have needed a source of income. Perhaps the paintings?

Simply amazing:) Thank-you for taking the time to dig this information up fig and bakers!
I agree, some of the letters look the same, especially the letter 'h', so this could be the same person. Thank-you both again!!

Sometimes Ancestry helps and sometimes it doesn't. I got lucky this time, cxgirl.

Always happy to help when I can.

I knew Ella Strittich as lived in same town with her in 1970's. I have a few of her paintings. Yes, that signature looks like hers. That house looks very much like the one she lived in in Summit although not yellow when I last saw it. Same style anyway as some houses on Rt 10 in heart of Summit. She did have her barn opened with paintings standing outside by the road and in the barn for folks to stop by and purchase. She did a lot of painting on glass. Glass of any sort she got her hands on used many types of jars. A lot of Masonite for larger paintings. I don't remember any on metal but I am sure they were there. I have a four season paintings on glass, a set of four pieces of glass one for each season. She did a lot of those sets each so unique. Lovely lady. She loved to talk with you when you stopped by to admire her work.
