Unusual Clasp

My Mom seemed to think this was something special. It looks like it could be silver but there are no markings of any kind. It is not magnetic. I have no clue what it could be but know that this is the right place to find out. The dimensions are 1 3/4" long x 1. 1/2" wide.

 

Pony tail clip.

 

How would that work? I often wear my hair in a ponytail & can't visualize how I could make use of this.

 

Hollyblue, you are amazing! I guess I could have figured a hair clip. Any thoughts on age or if it is really silver?

 

Pony tail holder/hair elastic,etc. after the hair is in a pony tail the clip slides right in between the hair and the clip.

 

The part that slides in seems awfully heavy duty for that. To me it looks more like one of those ill-conceived bookmarks people give as gifts that aren't anything you would want to subject a book to.

 

Could it be some sort of napkin clip? Sort of on the idea of the one shown here:

Thank you Bronwen & SBSVC for weighing in! It would be a little thick for a bookmark, it would seem, but that makes sense as well. I think I might lean to the napkin clip. Thanks to all for your help. I have a lot more to come!
