Could be, I like that thought. It does looks somewhat like a tulipiere or based on that idea maybe.

 

@komokwa I wondered about incense too, would have had a tray or something to burn it on or catch ashes?

@say_it_slowly, I'd never heard of a tulipiere..what a wonderful thing! I'm not sure this would be large enough. It's about 7-8 inches tall and the bottom opening is about 2 1/2 inches across. Would it have had a bottom tray also?

My husband asked if it could have been something to hold spoons or something on a table?

 

do i see a darker interior at the top openings and above that too..?

 

Funny you should ask! I was just looking at it again to estimate its size and I noticed that too! Yes, it looks sooty above the second hole from the top

Please understand that just because one could not find another in one's searches on Google , does not mean others do not exist ...or that it is the only one , or that it's in any way rare or valuable.
It may be........but most likely it's an average item that just hasn't been photographed by anyone else .....or it's there, but not until one uses the right search words, or it could be found...but on page 1468 of a search !

Google & the other search engines are vast.....but only a teeny tiny glimpse into what is actually out there.......

 

I'm not interested in the value as much as what it is and the way it was used. I love connecting dots and finding answers. I may overestimate google...but if a person knows the right question to ask or words to use...it's an amazing rabbit hole to jump down! I'm trying to identify so much stuff right now, this group has been a great help when google has let me down due to my lack of knowledge. I hope to be able to contribute a fraction of the help I've received.

I believe you may be missing a bottom and that this is a pastille burner.

 

My words for the day - pastille burner! Always learning something new. If only I could retain it...
