Chinese Box

    I purchased this about 10 years ago in Shanghai China. I needed something to hold keys at my entryway and thought this was a good size so bought it at an antique store. I thought it was unusual since it looks like there is detailed painting on the box but overpainted with some really bad details. Any ideas why this was done?     I think the decoration is fairly consistent; as produced IMO

    Although I agree that there is a difference in finesse between the gold-coloured outlines and the lacquer 'blotches', I agree with blooey, this is how it was made originally.
