Thank you! I have it resting on a side table with a lamp and a monkey in the "speak no evil" position with its hands over its mouth as if to say "Whaaaat? How did you get so lucky!" :woot: My Mom gave me a matching matchstick/toothpickholder to set with it.:joyful:

Love the same! My father had given me a beautiful English porcelain biscuit container with birds on it with a sterling handle and lid, and it met with an unfortunate demise one evening when someone slipped on a rug and it crashed to the floor. I was heartbroken...Not because it was worth about $400, but because my father had given it to me.

In searching the web for Rothschild Bird trays, the ones that I assume are similar in size to this one sell new for about $3o0 - $400 each. This one should be on the high side of that number due to the unusual shape and the decoration. What did you say the size was? I assumed about 8" across.

Oh, and I clicked "Like" on this comment, but not because you were heartbroken. I just like the personal stories that are shared on this site.

I have noticed a peculiar thing about Herend, in British salerooms at least, and that is that although the make does not turn up all that often, when it does it is one type of 'luxury goods' that sometimes sells for very little, certainly in comparison to the new price. I have some half dozen or so pieces I have picked up at auction for maybe £20 or so per piece, usually in mixed or multiple lots. At the same time ebay prices for Herend seem to be far higher. The US domestic market may be very different from the UK one.

I have toured the Herend factory in Hungary and seen the work that goes into these things, but I still think the factory gate prices of these articles are astronomical. Or maybe it is just the retail markup that is astronomical.

I want one of these or similar but will wait till I see one, it also has to be what I consider cheap.

AF, I have a couple of Herend ducks, and a few other pieces, but I would LOVE to have that cat! It is absolutely gorgeous!

I buy Herend bits when I find them going begging; some of my cousins are half Hungarian and their dad (born in West Germany after his parents had to bail out due to the failed Revolution) likes the stuff. Some goes for major dosh here and some goes for little. It depends on who knows what they're seeing and who's selling.

What size in that cat AF? Is it the mini or "small". I'm not sure they made/make that cat in the large size, but I could be mistaken. Heaven knows I have written the descriptions for enough Herend over the past few years. Fortunately it sold better for my employer on Amazon than on eBay. Same with Swarovski.

The only international buyers (for both) we ever had were in Australia.

Her Imperial Furriness is not impressed with the cat. It doesn't move so she can't chase it or run from it. I however would cheerfully roll out a porcelain cat dish for her.

I think the cat is of a reasonable size, 6 to 8 inches maybe. Not the tiny knick-nack objects I'd not give room to.

Herend isn't seen much here in the Midwest USA. When it does turn up I get it cheap because no one is familiar with it. I usually also pick it up in mixed lots. I've got a bunch of tiny vase sets, place cards for the table, and a few larger pieces. I definitely don't buy it new - way out of my budget and while it is pretty and well made I just can't justify buying at retail prices. I've got a footed cache pot in Rothschild around here someplace.

That would be the large size. I remember the elephant and giraffe in that size are priced over $500 retail, but I am not familiar with the cat. My (former) employer gets them on consignment from jewellers as aged stock, so if the cat shows up I'll let you know - some jewellers let these go below cost just to clear them out.
