Featured Brass Inkwell

    Can anyone identify this inkwell, age and origin?

    No marks to go on here, David. Looks to me like it's made in India. Quite popular in the beginning of the previous century, 1900's, when we still used pen and ink.

    Are there any marks on it, @David Wright ? It does have an Indian look to me, but I'm far from an expert on this type of thing.

    The mark doesn't say much unless someone has info on what the little figure below the number represents, perhaps a foundry stamp. The number methinks is just the particular model/style number assigned to this piece. Which looks more like bronze than brass to me actually. An inkwell like this is usually pretty weighty. Brass would be too light to be suitable.

    India is very famous for its brassware, so this doesn't surprise me if it was made in India.

    Age? At least 100 years. Inkwells didn't stop just because fountain pens were invented, though, but the general styling looks rather Victorian, so maybe 120, 130 years old.

    Several people say theirs are German. The two like yours don't show the mark but one say it says Germany so perhaps give yours another close inspection in case it's small on yours.

    Looks late Victorian to me. But I don't see an Indian origin.

    If it says Germany then I'd date it from 1891 to 1910.
