    There'd probably be a mark of some sort, or an indent where it was supposed to sit.

    Don't know the next thing about steins (kaiser rolls are a different matter:)), but doesn't the hole have something to do with fixing the lid to the stein?

    You know, there isn't much wear to the rim, or around the hole in the handle. Perhaps it always has been lidless.
