Pipe or Yatate??

I had this little pipe posted on another site. I thought it was an old pipe, possibly for smoking opium but someone suggested to me that it might be a Yatate of which I know nothing about. Any thoughts from the experts? The pipe is 2 5/8" long.

Personally I think it is a homemade pipe 2 blokes in a shed made to smoke their weed. BWDIK

BTW Thank you for providing me with the opportunity to learn something new today. I may never see one, but if I do I'll know what I am looking at & will know to grab it if it is cheap.

 

You don't smoke opium in a pipe like that! Looks a bit like a Kif pipe, but crudentitly so. Therefore agree with bakers, 2 blokes in a shed thing.

2nd hand store, used to be here...had a nice yatate, with a pen.....i wanted it...but he wanted my left nut !!!

 

depends on what you smoke; full with opium you wouldn't feel anything.

 

Just an FYI - there was a large Chinatown in my city back in the late 19thc and a few years ago opium pipe bowls would show up at garage sales once in a while.

Opium pipe bowls look like small vases or bottles except they have a small hole on the bottom and the bottom is polished and convex. Of course if you turn them upside down (rightside up!) they aren't vases at all - and the bottom is the top!
They are almost mushroom shaped and the "neck" of the "vase" fits into hole in the pipe stem, sitting there like a mushroom. The smoker smears the polished "bottom" with the sticky opium and holds the "bowl" to a flame from a small spirit lamp and as the opium smokes, the smoke is drawn in through the small hole.

this one is similar although most of what we would find would be slightly different but like this one, usually Yixing ware.
