Mourning jewellery?

I already mentioned this ornament in another thread but thought it wasn't conclusive enough.
This gutta percha ornament was glued to a clock from the 1880s (clearly a later addition, I looked it up, it is not a part of the clock case design)
One of you suggested it might be mourning jewellery. But was it specifically an ornament meant to be attached somewhere in the home or just a repurposed piece of mourning jewellery?

I'm thinking of putting it in a nice little frame or have it made into a piece of jewellery. What do you think? Ideas?

The shiny brown stuff on the piece is glue. Oh, and if it's really mourning jewellery, the ironic "farewell" on the right side in the second picture was not a case of intentional placement. I've never even read the book (page) I used as a background for this and only noticed afterwards.

That looks like it had a pinback on it at some time to begin with. You would just be repairing it if you made it back into a pin.

Was there a size mentioned in the other thread?

    I haven't measured it but it's roughly 2,5 inches.

And here I was thinking 2.5 inches long was about normal-sized for a pin. OTOH it could easily have been on a bracelet.

I'm more inclined towards this being a part of a picture frame or maybe a bible.
