yes that seems to be him almost certainly there's a collection of his works at the Japanese American museum that shows one that is almost perfect mirror image of this.

HOw on earth did you figure this out? thanks so much.

 

I followed my suspicion that first name is one I've seen before, Hideo, even though it doesn't much look like it as written.

 

yeah. I mean Hideo occurred to me, but when I searched I got a bunch of hits for Hideo Nomo famous pitcher in baseball. Re thinking it i see that Hideo Date turns up on first page of a google search for asian artist Hideo. Very well done. His work has apparently been rediscovered among artist in the animation field I guess.
